Cambodia really is a land of contrasts, and therefore cycling through this fascinating country was actually a little bit different to what we had expected. Apart from visiting Cambodia's tourist highlights, we feel like we also got to see parts that not many foreigners get to experience. Something that once again made us realize just how special our way of traveling is. What really stuck with us from our time in Cambodia, is how incredibly friendly the Khmer people we encountered were, which we think is especially remarkable given the extremely tragic recent history of the country. While we only briefly touch on the subject in our film (and only give a very simplistic overview of the events of the Cambodian Genocide), we encourage you to read a bit more about it, in order to even begin to understand the atrocities and hardships the people of Cambodia had to endure. After more than three months off our bikes, we are finally on the road again, heading east towards Cambodia, Laos and beyond! So join us, as our adventure around the world continues in this latest "vlog", and we show you just how easy and enjoyable cycling in Thailand can be. Although we only cycled here for about a week, we actually spent almost two months in Thailand (mainly in Bangkok), and enjoyed having friends & relatives visit us and taking a little break from filming. ...therefore, we don't have any footage of our time in Bangkok, and this film isn't a cultural "deep-dive". But don't worry, we'll be back with a more in-depth film for Cambodia! By the way, after looking at our footage again, we assume the guy from the detour was trying to tell us about wild elephants along the route... The "Nullarbor", literally meaning "no trees" in Latin, is a 1,100 km wide, mostly treeless plain, located on the Great Australian Bight. This vast open space is not only famous as being the largest limestone plateau in the world, but also known for the stunning Bunda Cliffs falling up to 120 meters vertically down into the sea! Riding the Nullarbor is undoubtedly one of the big highlights when cycling across Australia, and certainly didn't disappoint, but it is a bit different to what you might expect... After sorting out our mechanical issues, we headed into the mountains to finally begin our journey across Australia. The smooth gravel trails & peaceful camping spots we encountered made our ride towards Canberra and beyond, into the Riverina, a great experience! Having crossed the border from Bolivia to Chile at over 4600 m.a.s.l., we shot down the perfectly paved highway 27 towards San Pedro de Atacama. The incredible sight of the vast Atacama desert basin far below and ahead of us could only be topped by the sight of the 2000 meter high wall we had descended from, behind us. Once again, like in Perú before, we had spent weeks, even months, well above 3000-4000 meters… and it was about time for a change. So after two nights in San Pedro, an incredibly touristy but nice town, we set off through the Atacama, the driest non-polar desert in the world, towards the coast of Chile, without knowing what to expect... and what a great ride it was! It's hard to put into words the feeling you get when you're standing in the middle of the largest salt flat in the world and stare into an endless sea of white! Cycling across the Salar de Uyuni truly is an incredible experience. After spending three relaxing weeks in La Paz, our longest break in one spot in over 15 months, we set off south through Bolivia towards the Salar and beyond. The night before we attempted to cycled up to the refuge of Chimborazo at 4,800 m.a.s.l., we camped at 4,200 m, on a wide open, high-altitude plain. We found some shelter from the relentless wind behind a little hill, with a spectacular view of the volcano! Chimborazo, the highest mountain in the world (when measured from the Earth’s core) at 6,263 m, is an incredible sight to behold! ...and we were lucky enough to experience it in good weather. When we had previously cycled at altitudes between 3,000 and 4,000 meters, we had never really experienced any strong symptoms of altitude sickness, or noticed a significant reduction in our fitness. But this time, starting at around 4,400 m, we could really feel our lungs and muscles being starved of oxygen. It felt like with literally every meter more, we had less and less power, until at some point we weren't sure anymore, if we could make it... A few days after crossing the border to Ecuador, a massive landslide on the E45 highway towards Quito made our jaws drop. Not only at the scale of the destruction, but also because we couldn’t understand how we had come to be in a situation where we would have to take a 260 km detour! ...to make matters worse, we only had eight days left to reach Quito, in order to catch our flight to the Galápagos Islands. But after coming to terms with the circumstances, we actually had a pretty nice time taking a detour deep through the Amazon jungle and over a 4,000 m.a.s.l. pass.
